Dance to my remix Cassingle #1

Here at Fat Lace, as you may have noticed, we’ll collect anything: Roxanne battle records, Reagan-era anti (and pro) crack tracks, longbox CD’s, press shots, posters, vintage jackets, in-store VHS compilations of hip-hop videos. Yep, when we go to join Tupac in hell, our kids will be absolutely baffled by the shit we hoarded. But they’ll probably reserve their greatest ire for having to carboot sale a load of cassingles. When budget-cutting record labels started to eschew picture covers and just dropped 12″s and promo LP’s with mere sticker sleeves, they still kept producing artwork that found its way onto CD and cassette singles. As most of us and y’all are vinyl collectors, this is a largely unseen treasure trove of hip-hop cover art. Well, unseen by people who don’t collect vintage cassingles, anyhoo. We kick you off with gems from Akinyele and PHD:

Akinyele – Ak Ha Ha! Ak Hoo Hoo? (Interscope Records, 1993) – click to enlarge

PHD  – Keep it Real / Concrete Jungle (Tuff City Records, 1983) – click to enlarge

Interscope was on fire in the early 90s. Seriously. Who stole my genre?
