Aiight. Y’all mothersuckers better realize Fat Lace run tings, tings nah run we. Seen? Ahem. OK, it’s been a busy week, we’re back on our posting grind and believe us, we got better things to do. So as we haven’t had a Westwood Wednesday for a minute we pulled out a good one. First thing, you lot better leave some comments to make us feel special. Secondly, we need you to tweet this shit, facebook this shit, email this shit or whatever because we ain’t busting our balls to bring you these gems without some amplification. Marketing speak, sorry.

So we’re taking a pause for the cause during EPMD Week and going back to nineteen eighty motherflippin’ nine. We’re talking The Powerful Powerlord, and that’s just Westwood. Yes it’s the one and only Sugar Bear…. in interview. You may remember the very first Westwood Wednesday, which was actually called Timothy Tuesdays back then, when we featured a Sugar Bear live session and there was more Sugar Bear here. But aside from Coslit’s finest, this is one hell of a show, just peep the track listing. It’s is radio gold, so press play and record baby.

PART 1 DOWNLOAD HERE

PART 2 DOWNLOAD HERE

As a bonus we’ve included some O.G. label scans of the Talking Head sampling classic ‘Don’t Scandalize…’. We can only imagine back then Sugar Bear moving from the boutique Coslit label to the power house of Next Plateau was like Jay Elec bouncing from Bad Boy to Roc Nation. Or something. And yes nerds, we get that it was a license. Either way, this was a bona fide club classic which got rotation for years to come, often sitting side by side with Rob Base ‘It Takes Two’ on floors from Manhattan to London and Paris to Peru. However, we had more of a penchant for the B side and a Kool DJ Red Alert staple, ‘Ready To Penetrate’.

One thing that always puzzled us was that Shabazz is credited with producing both these cuts but if you heard their other records, it sounds like bad Teddy Riley. Strangely enough, Eric Sadler is credited with producing Shabazz so we reckon, given the Long Island / Public Enemy connection with Sugar Bear, these were actually early Bomb Squad productions. Can anybody shed more light on the subject? Answers on a postcard.

Forget Banksy’s rat stencils, this is some straight classic Crayola ishtish. This one off Westwood masterpiece was commissioned by (www.keech.org.uk) Keech Hospice Care. Theo Walcott, Trevor Nelson and The Saturdays also donated a butterfly print for the charity. At time of writing it was up to £25.00 on eBay but rumour has it Jolie is planning a snipe bid for £2.3m. Just in case she forgets don’t miss out on this one of a kind print, Westwood’s first and last attempt at art.

Place your bids HERE.

Been a minute since we gave you a dose of Westwood on a Wednesday so here you go, boom, a double dosage. First up we’ve drawn a selection from November ’89 courtesy of the Capital Rap Show. Listen out for some bangers from EPMD, The Jungle Brothers, T La Rock and the much slept on Mighty Mike Tyson by Spoonie G. In the gig guide this week the Capital Rap Show Live to London blasts off on Sasturday 10th November at The Dingwalls Nightclub with special guests MC Duke and The E.L. Posse. This Saturday Westwood touches down at the Prestatyn Soul Weekender, not literally, this was 21 years ago. Sorry but the tape cuts off after Unique but what better track to end on?

DOWNLOAD HERE

As an extra dose of flavour we’ve got an even older show from 92.5 LWR. This vintage Westwood show finds Afrika Islam and Jazzy Jay on the wheels dropping classic breakbeats. There’s a live segment from the Cold Crush Brothers as well as the hottest cuts including Lesson 3 by Double D and Steinski. In the coming weeks we’ll delve deeper into the LWR archives courtesy of DJ Scott La Harris.

DWG are back with a dope new poster. It’s much less elitist than the last one, many of these records are slightly easier to find, certainly less inflated on the price front and to be honest in most cases better. We’re fans of the random rap but prices are getting ridiculous, cats are forgetting the staples. On the whole DWG have come up with another quality offering with scans of some amazing promo only releases and accompanying commentary for each one. Hopefully the eBay prices on some of these gems will get a much deserved boost. A must own item.

Hit ‘em up HERE and cop one now.

Vibe Magazine once had the front page splash “Mariah Carey hits the beach in heels”, and considered Prancehall to be the world’s 47th best rap blog. And yet it somehow closed down. Queue all manner of handwringing and gnashing of teeth regarding how “rap print journalism is dead”. Who cares? Let it go. The internet has changed all of this, has any piece of written rap criticism this past half-decade come close to the thrill of that first hour you spent following B:Real on Twitter, being helpfully informed that it was “ONLY 3 HOURS TO 420”? Does any printed press byline stir the soul as much as that CollarMe.com lookin’ picture Combat Jack used to use for his profile? No. We celebrate the death of the printed rap press here, and for one welcome our new online overlords. Welcome to the first in a series of pieces detailing the future of rap journalism, those cats holding it down on YouTube. These guys understand rap.

One of the key texts in the “New Journalism” school of writing was Gay Telese’s 1966 piece “Frank Sinatra Has A Cold” (CLICK HERE), a convention-defying pen portrait published in Esquire Magazine that, despite running to 15,000 words, was written without a single interview being conducted between Telese and the original King of New York. Many credit the article’s success to the fact that Telese wasn’t a celebrity profiler, or a music hack: he was a straight-up newsman, and his distance from the subject allowed him to take a new eye on it.

Most of the great journalists have written their finest works outside of their normal beat: Norman Mailer on boxing, Gore Vidal on 19th century warfare, Tanya Gold on dressing up as a fairy at Glastonbury (CLICK HERE). And it’s from this tradition that Ms Ashlee So Flyy comes from. Ashlee usually talks about topics such as “can i get an L-OH-L”, a satire of Myspace politics, or “stop tricking us tila” (CLICK HERE), a paean to that busted-ass Vietnamese broad with the MTV reality show. But “TECH N9NE?” is just a great piece of art. Never mind the fact she looks like Chris Crocker decided to bulk up at the gym, or never mind the fact that when she says “TECH N9NE” repeatedly she’s vocally reminiscent of the racist caricature scientist from Short Circuit, how can you not appreciate true emotional honesty when she says “All hail to the Nine”, sounding to all the world like a supporting character from Animaniacs? She then goes on to buy a cellphone. That’s pink.

I mean, we could talk on this for ages, but the comment box has it all:

SabuSexGod (55 minutes ago)
God, I would love to suck your dick.

Zeffa1234 (1 day ago)
u should be in one of those pornos where the guy(s) slaps the chick around lol

clickeduptexas (1 week ago)
im against hitting females
but i will punch you
right in the fucking mouth

And really, all great rap critics should aspire to that level of haterdom.

When we published our last big fuck-off list of rap names for people to buy, we expected our readers to make some more up, but nothing else to come of it. How wrong we were. Instead, we were inundated with offers from big name rap moguls hoping to scoop them up. You know: Lyor, Russell, P, Suge, Rich Black from Pitch Black, that little white boy who did Guesswhyld. All the heavy hitters. In fact, the only one we didn’t sell was ‘Fat Nonce’ but that’s because Fat Nonce himself e-mailed us to tell us he already existed and was promised a guest shot on the next Natural Resource 12″ b-side whenever they decide to reform. So we had to go back to the well and hit you with some more, with some help from our friend Paedo Pete (we keep telling him to change that up, but once a name sticks…). Offers below £5K will be laughed at.
