GURU Week Part 3: GangStarr Posse

No prizes for knowing which members of the original line-up of Gang Starr went on to fame and fortune. While Guru and Premo went on to drink popular drinks, DJ 1 2 B Down added ‘Posse’, put a * instead of an ‘a’ in the name and rebooted as ‘GangSt*rr Posse’ back in Beantown. Shorn of their star, they released two 12″s – the rarely seen ‘Young Girls’ / ‘It’s How Ya Cope’ and the common-as-muck and actually quite good ‘Read the Label’ / ‘Swinga’, which you can hear below.

To be fair to the trio of 1 2 B Down, King Shab and Little Smitty, they weren’t exactly trying to coin it off the Gang Starr name. After all, when Wild Pitch first came knocking, 1 2 B Down was part of the project and had some residual right to use it. And as these archived press releases from our deep crates show, they weren’t trying to make great play of their more famous counterparts either. Sadly, there wasn’t enough going on either vocally or musically to launch this group into the stratosphere.
