Pete Rock & CL Smooth perform ‘T.R.O.Y.’ live in London

So we went to see the legends that are Pete Rock & C.L. this week at The Garage, London. We’ve upped the best part of the night where Pete Rock called for 5 seconds of silence for Michael Jackson. Twice he asked, twice someone shouted ‘Paedophile’ prompting C.L. in his best English accent to call him a ‘wanker’ and a ‘fucking knob head’. It then gets better as C.L. announces he even loves Bubbles and would get in Michaels bed. A hilarious intro to a stone cold classic. Check www.spinemagazine.com for the full interview with them next Monday.

Fave Pete Rock & C.L. track in the comments section please, we’ll then up the top 5 with some un-released rarities for you.

Anyone else catch them back in around 94 in London when they came on and did ‘main ingredient/I gotta love’ at the gang starr jam? Classic. Only time I’ve seen them live together.

Man. I did NOT know about this gig. I would definitely have come down to London for it had I known. Last I heard they had some unreconcilable beef with each other. I didn’t expect them to perform together again any time soon. I remember listening to their last Jazz Cafe show on Gilles Peterson in 2004. It sounded incredible. Dayum…

    Top 5 Pete/CL trizzacks:

    1. T.R.O.Y.
    2.Sun Won’t Come Out
    3. Appreciate (MJ sample, incidentally)
    4. Worldwide
    5. I Got A Love

(Am I the only one who prefers the Main Ingredient album to Mecca & The Soul Brother? Don’t get me wrong, they’re both front-to-back str8 gem classic)

I saw them back in 1992 at the Hammersmith Palais. It was on the same night as label mates Leaders of the New School were playing over at Shaftesbury’s in the West End. You basically had to choose between the two. Mc Mello supported Pete Rock and CL Smooth and, as far as I remember, it was a great show.

    1) TROY
    2) GOOD LIFE
    3) CREATOR
    4) I GOT A LOVE
    5) THE BASEMENT

That night was one of my best Hip Hop nights to date.. me and my homegirl didn`t choose we hit both!! We took train, bus and did some serious stepping..to get from west to west end..some friends of ours were putting on the Leaders Jam..we hadn`t predicted how unorganised they would be as promoters, got to Shaftsbury`s and Leaders hadn`t come on yet..they didn`t go on till 3am!! Always remeber Charlie Brown doing some crazy freestyle bout a girl in the crowd in a red dress!! Maaan that was a night!!

My mate was there, standing near a very well known, er, “not fat” english rapper who, by the sounds of it, may well have been the target of the “wanker” shouts…..

Main Ingredient better than Mecca? Come on…

    1 – Mecca & The Soul Brother
    2 – Soul Brother #1
    3 – TROY
    4 – It’s Like That
5 – Act Like You Know

I think Mecca has the classic genre defining track, and it’s a more important record but, for my own personal tastes, Main Ingredient bumps along at a much nicer pace and consistency. It’s a more smoked-out album compared to Mecca’s tight sunshine funkiness. Like I was saying, they’re both all-time classic albums. Main Ingredient pips it by a bawhair for me, though.

Oh, and that’d be hilarious if it was Skinny Man getting cussed out. I really hope that’s true.
