Rap Groups We Know Nothing About: Sid & B-Tonn
We resurrected this once regular feature after trawling through a pile of golden oldies and wondered…what ever happened to Sid & B-Tonn? Little is know about these signees to the joint venture label between Russell Simmons’ RUSH ASSOCIATED LABELS and Columbia Records, home to Onyx, Terminator X to name a few. Rumour has it these guys were also under the wing of Rakim and it was he that introduced them to the label. Listen closely to the flows and there is a trace of Rakim Allah. Their one and only single release featured two mixes of the track ‘Deathwish’ (below). So on some Crime Watch type steez, does anybody know owt?

tight. im hearin more of an epmd influence than a rakim one but still.
Sidney Reynolds / S.I.D. Reynolds mainly produced for Nikki D after doing this, along with doing stuff with other Flavor Unit people (Apache, Naughty By Nature, Queen Latifah, LeShaun). Other than that I think he did a remix for Slick Rick and not much else.
Dunno about B-Tonn.
I think the delivery is quite EPMD but the lyrics themselves are pure Rakim.
Deathwish 2 is sick. How much does this 12″ usually go for?
£5 to £10, an easy pickup.
There’s talk in record nerd circles of a promo 12″ of this with an extra cut on that didn’t make the retail release.
I LOVE this record. I’ve actually bought this about 3 times – just to give to people as I always see it cheap. Like seriously £2 every time. In fact I’m pretty sure they have at least one copy in RareKind’s bargain racks.
They also had that track ‘Smiling Faces’ – but only have it on a tape somewhere – however, that may be the bonus track you’re talking about Drew?
I reckon that’s the one Salvador. I’ll track it down on vinyl one day…
never heard this before.
2nd one’s beat sounds like it’s based on chorus line.
wow a nice otown sample and a good flow i used to love this record when i was a kid. btw downtown science shouted them out on room to breathe as well as kurious jorge and nikki d and a whole bunch of rappers no one remembers. long live ral
