Billy Paul is black enough for us

It’s rare that a soul legend gets a film made about him – never mind a living one – so we’ll be making time to see Goran Olsson’s ‘Am I Black Enough For You’ about Philly OG Billy Paul. Most reviewers aren’t buying the movie’s premise – that Paul scuppered his career by following up the worldwide smash ‘Me and Mrs Jones’ with the somewhat more strident ‘Am I Black Enough For You’ – but apparently it’s a fine watch anyway, with some intriguing tensions between Billy and wife Blanche. If times are that hard for Billy, he could always sue Schoolly D for basing his whole rather unconvincing (but musically glorious) Afrocentric phase on Billy’s pro-Black anthem.
