Tim Dog on Max ‘n’ Dave in 1991
The Meaning of Dope might have that vintage TV locked down but we’re the gods of vintage rap radio. Once again it’s on, this time with the Bronx Nigga himself live and direct on the awesome Max n Dave show from London’s Kiss FM back in ’91. Usually Wednesdays are reserved for another Tim but this time South BX’s finest speaks about Ultramagnetic, has a pop at Dr Dre, DJ Quik and pretty much everyone else from Compton that’s making a lot more money than Tim Dog these days. Even that age old debate that has no relevance whatsoever in 2008 raises it’s ugly head: CD’s vs Vinyl. Like who cares? Well, we did back then. Enjoy and some feedback would be nice. Tim, if you’re out there, holla at us, we’d love to do a follow up interview.

Somewhere between here and Sheffield either Ben or I have a tape lying around of Tim Dog live on the Formation 5 show on Leicester’s Fresh FM. Ghetto ghetto ghetto. I just remember the whole thing sounding deeply amateur. Must be from the same trip over here. He played in Leicester back then as did Ultramag. Starlite crew stand up!!
So much hilarity in this. The Black Butterfly chick rapper he mentions who is a female version of Tim Dog. Genuine L-O-L.
I never really thought about it before but Tim Dog was the godfather of not-very-good NY rappers disguising lack of rap skills with an aggressive gimmick and moaning about rappers from other regions who are more successful (and make better music), wasn’t he? He’s Zeus to the likes of Uncle Murda, Saigon and Joell Ortiz.
Was he the first not-very-good-at-rapping bodyguard to get a solo deal? I can’t think of anyone before him. If so, O.G weed carrier right here.
Dope interview..Penicilin On Wax is one of my all time favourite Lps..I hear Tims back in the studio with Keith working on a new Lp for 2008..
I’m from the South Bronx, fuck Compton!
I went to see Nice ‘n’ Smooth at Hammersmith Palais in ’92, and in the middle of their set they brought out Tim Dog and he performed ‘Fuck Compton’. It was amazing.
@ Brian Beck:
Are you retarded? Has Weezy-raps and sizzurp rotted your brain son?
Saigon and Joell are nice rappers. Period.
But otherwise you’re kinda right
I would have said: Fat Joe, Big Shug or N.Y.G.’z to name a few. But that’s just me.
I actually like a few Saigon and Joell Ortiz songs but they’re both very average rappers who live and die on the quality of their beats and their constant whining about rappers from other coasts really grates on my nerves, as does their earnestness. Rap should NEVER be earnest.
Tim Dog also did Bronx Nigga that night too. Ah the good old days. That was a show like no other.
The DJ Quik beatdown skit from his first lp is still a classic.
The Dog’s recent efforts have been really poor. Get some decent production.
Yes, he did start the trend of poor NY rappers. unfortunately that torch has been passed to NYG’z, Big Shug, M.O.P. (I said it, still like their hate though), Group Home and who has produced them all?…… Still better than the majority of todays generation. moan, moan, it’s never been the same since the golden era.

actually brian in wisconsin, people forget that a big part of being a good rapper/MC is having that natural style and charisma; that ‘certain cool’ .. tim dog had much more than, versus lets say lead rapper from the rusty pelicans.
people also like to forget that lots of casual rap fans in NY were not fucking with anything from cali

while none of those group contain super lyricist-type cats, again they all still have some type of style and charisma on the mic…young guys and corny sportscasters might call it swag. you cant really manufacture the type of styles im refering to
LOL at Tim Dog announcing like 8 different projects that never come out within the first 10 minutes of the interview. Oh yeah man I got my 2nd album coming out, Black Butterfly, The Hit Mob…oh yeah and it’s on this label and that label.
*chuckle*
Tim Dog is so wack he’s dope–always loved him. His forceful voice and delivery can make the wackest lines sound kind of dope.
