The Hardrock Soul Movement on Kiss FM, 1991
What with Westwood only appearing sporadically on Wednesdays from now on – we prefer drip feeding to spoon feeding – our man Damon Boyes has stepped into the breach with a classic show from two unsung heroes of UK hip-hop – Max LX and Dave VJ. The duo were originally part of the Mastermind Roadshow, and played their part in mixing many of the early Electro compilations on the Streetsounds label. They recorded under the name Hardrock Soul Movement in the mid 80′s and had minor UK hits with gems like ‘Double Def Fresh’ and ‘Elaweazer Just A Skeezer’.
But they’re known to most as the hosts of one of the UK’s most hard-hitting radio shows on Kiss FM, both in its pirate and legal days. This session from 1991 isn’t the best quality ever – but stick with it and you’ll hear gems from both sides of the Atlantic, plus an interview with a pre-Wu Genius talking about his pals Prince Rakeem and Ason Unique…

thanks for this guys
cheers for this! got any old ‘Richie Rich’s Rap Academy’ TDKs tucked away anywhere?
Dope, I got most of the old UK radio stuff on original recordings I did back in the day, never have enough time to get em all on MP3, but I’ll grab this to listen at work…thanks!
all we need now is some Faze One.
btw, when Faze One made “stronger than strong”, how did they know how strong ‘strong’ was, for them to be saying they were stronger than it ?
i mean, if i said ‘i’m colder than cold’ then i would be better off saying ‘i’m freezing’ as it avoids repetition and also informs you of an example of something that actually is ‘colder than cold’, whereas ‘stronger than strong’ doesn’t tell us enough , but rather just expects us to believe them on the strength of it .
what they could’ve said is ‘we’re stronger than any connotation you normally attach to the word strong’; or more simply ‘we’re beyond strong’.
Strong is defined in the doomsday book as ‘the strength it taketh two oxes to pull a large sized plough up a steep hillock’. That’s ‘THE’ doomsday book from back in the old old old school, not the ‘operation doomsday’ book/CD by MF Doom.
ps I can’t find a clip of max and dave on kids sat morning tv show ‘Number 73′ on youtube, but I distinctly remember hardrock were on there cutting up on a GLI.
Yes! – i remember seeing them on T.V too.. (i may be wrong) but i always thought it was on the old grey whistle test?? – Wearing white tracksuits and cutting up sucker mc’s .. – Doing a kinda tutorial on cutting/scratching etc.. Was classic and i’d love to see it on youtube… Somebody must have it… PLEASE!!
