Review: Lil Wayne officially drops ‘The Leak’
Now, this we like. Five new official Weezy tracks forming the most concise commercial release since the the days of the ‘All Souled Out’ EP (and that one by The Jaz that no-one gave a fuck about, but had those crazy nice Prince Paul and Large Pro beats – shit wasn’t there even a 45 King one on that joint?). Why can’t it always be this simple? A couple of listens and you’re satisfied that ‘I’m Me’ carries the torch for that modern N.O. Sound, whilst ‘Gossip’ sounds appropriately epic in such sparse context. ‘Kush’ is that album track that remembers not to alienate the ladies, and ‘Love Me Or Hate Me’ proves why Wayne’s delivery remains the reason he can still get away with lines like “I’m all about a dollar like four quarters”. It does help however, when he also shares ridiculous lines line “Ey Juelz, I swear the other day I pissed Cristal” We wonder if Juelz calls Wayne to say, “Yeah, and the other day I followed through in the Def Jam offices” Anwyay, ‘Talkin About It’ recalls that Baby Gangsta flow and is ultimately an end that’s ‘”solid like an elbow cast” (his words not ours). There’s no flab, skits, indulgences and as a result no complaints right here. Yeah. you’ve maybe heard these joints before, and the word ‘leak’ has been used on more releases than the word ‘God’, but this is how they should be heard. Stick ‘La La La’. ‘Pray To The Lord’ and ‘Dying’ in the same folder and it’s a wrap.

I don’t know about that, ‘Go DJ’ was the tune that got me into lil wayne coz I liked cutting up the ‘go dj’ bit, but then I got some more of his stuff, his 1st solo LP wasn’t that good, but theres 2 or 3 tunes I like, Carter had some good ones on it, Carter 2 had some gems like ‘mo fire’ and ‘shooter’, he’s got some lines if you listen, quite funny shit, I dunno if you can compare his EP to ‘All Souled Out’ or that Jaz EP, that’s classic shit right there, but I prefer to listen to some of his stuff than Lupe Fiasco or some other big names like that, I wasn’t 100% sure about ‘Barry Bonds’ though, I prefer that other track he did with Kanye, dunno wot it’s called. I think Weezy tries a bit harder than a lot of his southern counterparts to put some original lyrics in, their corny lines, but nomore corny than Nice
…Nice and Smooth would come up with. I thought that whole 50 vs kanye thing was wack and think 50 makes some desperate sounding BS these days, but I like Weezy, I’m def looking forward to Carter 3, youknow there’ll be gems on there.

I personally have the same feeling about wayne that I had when I heard the Wu or Illmatic or PE at the time (I am quite old), i.e. good production, memorable lines, nice flow. Wayne doesn’t always hit it for me, and I hate “Barry Bonds”, but this EP is solid all the way through, which is more than can be said for American Gangster, or any album Nas has released post illmatic.

Genius?! Nah, I don’t see that. But defo some gems, I’ll stick by that, I pulled out some weezy today and Carter LP still sounds nice thanks to Mannie Fresh’s laid back grooves, lyrically nothing amazing, but theres lines like ‘sorta like VD, you can’t stop my dribbling’ which I don’t think many could get away with. Carter 2 wasn’t so consistent, but I’d consider ‘mo fire’ a gem, reggae style beat but he aint trying to rhyme in a fake Jamaican accent. ‘Shooter’ is pop, but in the outkast style of pop rap ie catchy, and ‘receipt’ is OK, but it’s not an LP I could listen to all the way through…Not one of the best MC’s of all time, but he’s got personality, even if it is that of a crackhead with tonsilitis, he’s got something, can’t dismiss him as being wack.

Lil Wayne is INCREDIBLY overrated. Yes, he does have some crazy similes, but that’s all he has. I don’t know how you can call someone the best rapper alive when every song is just a random collection of “like” and “as” lines. A good rapper should be able to do more than that. On a scale of 1 to 10, Lil Wayne sits exactly at a 5, maybe a 5.5. He has a lot of good lines, a lot of bad ones, and mediocre albums.
Seriously, not every rapper has to be as black and white as “Greatest of all time” or “Worst of all time.” Some people are allowed to be average. I’ll still listen to Lil Wayne if he comes on the radio or someone plays his CD and I’m around, but don’t expect me to ride his dick like a lot of people do. Grow a fuckin’ mind of your own and develop your own opinions about rappers.
