Rap Groups We Know Nothing About #4

November 21st, 2007 · 9 Comments

the two

It’s always been baffling how some groups only get to make one damn record. Seeborn & Puma? Run DMC? Only ever allowed one shot in the studio. The same goes for The Two, whose 1986 Profile joint ‘The Real Grandmaster’ is far too good to go unforgotten. This was heard back in the day on Mike Allen, and sounds not unlike labelmates Word of Mouth’s work with DJ Cheese. Great voices, nice, simple rhymes, 80’s scratching and more than a soupcon of beatbox (courtesy of Mouth-A-Matic). So, what do we know? Well, that’s about it. Tony and Ulysses Sankitts are credited as The Two, and would go on to produce most of the tracks on the 1986 ‘Uptown is Kickin’ It’ compilation and TKA’s ‘Scars of Love’. Since then, nada. Can you help? Are you Excer Riviera who did the synthesizers? No? Then who the hell are you?

Seems like Tony Sankitts passed away in 2002.

Might be worth contacting this dude to see if you can get in touch with the others, says he used to know The Two and is still in contact with Excer.

    jesus christ !

i cant believe it. i’d completely forgotten about this. got it off peel at the time but missed the first ‘grandmaster’ with a late pause activation.

anyrode, while we’re on the subject there was a nother one hit group called (i think) the chosen 2 who had a track using the same break from steady b ’serious’ remix…

had a line that said -
“when i walk in the place, the people say buss it/ why you so def?, i dont wanna discuss it “!

sounded bit like like lord shafiyq

    ring any bells ?

If I remember correctly, The Two were actually formed of a couple of rappers who coincidentally called themselves The One. They consolidated. It wasn’t long before they began to disagree about things like whether to use the curly profile logo or the one in block letters or whose turn it was to put the kettle on. They split up not long after this single. One of the remaining One’s joined the Funky Four, taking them to The Funky Four + 1, then the other One got jelous and joined the group and instead of changing the name to the Funky Four + 2 Ones, they changed it to Funky Four Plus One More, a clever play on words. I think that’s what happened. Does that help? Has anyone got the time?

yep, I know the record. It’s called ‘This is talent’, backed with ‘Yo Swift’ on Rohit records. Dope track, much sought after, fetches about 50 quid on ebay

I prefer the curly Profile logo.

I have vague recollections of this, it sounds a bit like Like This by Versatile Sounds which is also Profile (and maybe used the in-house synth)
