Jam Your Radio
Whilst we’re on the wireless tip, in the old school sense, let’s pour out a little tea for another legend who broke rap records in the 80′s like it was a strange Greek wedding. John Peel might have spent most of his two hour shows playing Bogshed, Bhundu Boys and Bum Gravy, but he also found time to drop in most of the Kaos ‘Court’s in Session’ LP, and countless UK rap fans would sit with their fingers hovering over the record button on their ALBA tape decks for the 3 or 4 rap gems he’d play every night. Where else could you hear Raw Dope Posse’s ‘Listen to my turbo’?
The pleasure came not just from the music itself, but also from the late Peel’s responses to it. Check out the LL clip here for his anger at the sexism (which later, sadly, manifested itself in a more or less total rap ban from his shows) of LL’s ‘Bad’ LP or dig out the time he was taken by surprise by the hasty ending of Frick ‘n’ Frack’s ‘Go Southside’. For these clips, we’ve preserved his intros and outros. We’re still trying to track down the exclusive sessions he dropped from Demon Boyz, Overlord X and Asher D & Daddy Freddy, so stay tuned. But for now, cop these…

Matter of fact, I’ve still got virtually all my tapes from the days blad! one day i will convert them and enrich society with their sheer profundity
and rawness.
sittin in bed from 10-12 with my sanyo radio cassette on pause betwixt the sacred echelon of 84-88, my bredrin JPB (RIP) used to do the same but I would always fall asleep before the end so he would get one extra track that i never had and I would have to face our 2 tape decks toward each other and record em like that (no homo).
peace

john peel’s show was the only place to hear new hip hop when i were a lad, god bless ‘im. i have the overlord x session but without any JP intros.
glad you’re back btw, the magazines were a hoot, missed issue 1 though..
thanks…..education right here.
I love the vintage radio posts! Keep ‘em coming!
Yep…another who grew up taping tracks from Peel’s show…weird, I thought I must’ve been the only one at the time! There was certainly nowhere else to her ‘em where I grew up (deepest Swansea). Sure I’ve got a whole session from Gunshot on tape somewhere…
Nice one for bringing Fat Lace back to us.
